I wrote a poem in the dark
the paper moved beneath my touch
my pencil broke a lonely heart
and the night rose
early before the dayfall
and my song fell crying
at the edge of the earth
and i saw you going away
and i noticed that your head never turned
to watch me in my rage against god
who loved you as surely as I
the road rose bitter and dry
the day closed my lips my mouth my nose
and the air fell a weight upon my soul
I kept your face under my pillow
and caressed you when sleep deserted me
Like a lover in the night
the song in the air that left you as your voice
became my anxious lullaby
and for a thousand long darknesses I spoke to you
softly and speaking I kept something close to me
In that land where dreams are princes
You return again to me with promises
Of how you will never leave me
And I rejoice in the golden hour
and I salute the promise of love
and the gift of your grace
becomes again my only reason for life.
I wote a poem in the light
And fastened the words to paper soft as snow
and in the white morning
threw them up into the wind
and when the rain fell it held
within its warm breath
the silence of my love
